TOOLS FOR THE DYSLEXIC:LEARNING TO NAVIGATE THROUGH A NON-DYSLEXIC WORLD WHEN YOU VIEW THE WORLD COMPLETELY DIFFERENTLY

It can be the difference of failure or success for the individual suffering with this debilitating ailment. While it is still a problem for me to manage, I want you to understand this is something you can manage too with a little time, and thorough understanding of yourself. Dyslexia can be one of the most frustrating things to deal with in adulthood. The most frustrating part of this equation is the fact that it doesn't really take a lot more energy to help dyslexics, but having a teacher look at themselves and ask "what do I need to do?" Many won't do this and instead pass the blame onto the student, and thus, the vicious cycle of dyslexia continues. Later on, I got a job working for a politician writing letters for him to constituents. Many times, I would daydream in class because the material would be hard for me to follow. From understanding driving directions, to speaking and writing, the dyslexic mind will distort information making it almost impossible to understand or will show a non-dyslexic person an interesting perspective on how to look at a given problem. In fourth grade our teacher would write notes for us to copy from the board and I would write them in my notebook completely incorrectly.

PUBLIC SPEAKING

You will probably find this to be a simple yet very effective tool in combating the flip flopping aspect of the dyslexic mind. If you know this to be a problem, hopefully you have figured out ways to handle yourself when it happens. Perhaps you want to speak quickly because it seems impressive when others do it? Many individuals believe if they speak something quickly, he or she will impress their boss or other individuals he or she is speaking with. However, what these individuals do not realize is the simple act of switching pronouns when speaking with another individual can make you seem uneducated, unreliable and possibly confused.

VERB AGREEMENTS

When speaking with someone else, you should find that slowing down when you speak and correcting what you say will help you form correct sentences. There are a couple of ways to combat the problem of inaccurate verb agreements.

WRITING

You can simply tell them, for example, "The best way to get in touch with me is by e-mail. That way you can clearly read everything an individual has written you and you can clearly write that individual back checking it and triple checking it to make sure your verb agreements and pronoun usage is correct. This will help you communicate with the world immensely.

TAKING STANDARDIZED TESTS
